BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Michael Phelps won a leading three Golden Goggles awards including male athlete of the year Sunday night when USA Swimming honored the year’s top American performers.

Phelps was nominated in three individual categories and for two relays in connection with his historic performance in March at the world championships in Melbourne, Australia. He won seven gold medals and broke four individual world records.

Phelps beat out Ryan Lochte and backstroker Aaron Peirsol for male athlete of the year. That trio was also nominated for male performance of the year, which Phelps won for his world-record 200-meter butterfly race in Melbourne. He lowered his own mark by 1.62 seconds, and finished in 1 minute, 52.09 seconds.

Katie Hoff was chosen female athlete of the year, having won three golds at the world championships. She set her first individual world record in the 400 individual medley at Melbourne, beating the competition by 7.25 seconds.

The teenager from the same North Baltimore club that produced Phelps also anchored the world-record-setting 800 free relay in Melbourne, where she won the 200 IM.

Ryan Lochte won the perseverance award for upsetting Olympic and world champion Aaron Peirsol in the 200 backstroke at the world championships with a world-record time.

Phelps and Lochte, along with Klete Keller and Peter Vanderkaay, won relay performance of the year for their effort in the 800 free relay at the world championships. They set a world record, with Phelps leading off the race.

Ben Wildman-Tobriner was honored as breakout performer of the year for his stunning victory in the 50 freestyle at the world championships, where he edged out teammate Cullen Jones.

Kate Ziegler received the female performance of the year award for breaking Janet Evans’ world record in the 1,500 free in June at a meet in Mission Viejo, Calif. Ziegler lowered the longest-standing world record in swimming by 9.5 seconds.

Bob Bowman, who coaches Phelps and runs the Michigan team, was named coach of the year for the second consecutive year. Bowman’s athletes set five world records in Melbourne, where he was the head coach of the men’s team.

Late-night talk show host Carson Daly hosted the awards at the Beverly Hilton hotel. Fans voted online to decide the winners.
